The City may collect non-personal data like IP addresses, browser types, the date, time, referring pages (the last webpage visited before clicking on a link to the city's website), the number of visits, the pages on this web site to which you link during a visit.

The information listed above is collected automatically when you access the City's web site.

Does this site request your browser to place a cookie on your computer?
Yes, if you choose to register and/or log on to any of the City's e-Gov Online Services. Registration may require entry of some personal information in order to create the account (typically the visitor's name, email address, and a password for account access). For certain services, such as online tax payment services, it may be necessary to provide credit card or other payment information which may be stored temporarily in encrypted form on secure servers but not with the city. All online credit card transactions are handled by third party Software as a Service (SaaS) providers. This privacy policy is intended to be in compliance with the Va. Code Section 2.2-3803.
These online applications do use cookies to pass session IDs from the server to the end user's PC. These session cookies collect no sensitive information and the data that is collected is not retained. How is the collected information used?
The City may periodically analyze the web site activity by tracking visitor movements through the site. Each computer on the Internet has an IP address. Ensuring Confidentiality
The City utilizes a system of hardware and software known as a "firewall" to regulate information that can enter and exit the City's web server(s). This ensures that only authorized access occurs and that information remains confidential.
What if you voluntarily provide personally identifiable information?
Such information is treated the same way as if it had arrived in a letter. For example, suppose you use the Restaurant Complaint Form to file a complaint about a restaurant in the City. That page asks you to enter personally identifiable information such as your name, address, and phone number. The information is received by the appropriate agency, in this case, the Health Department, and only shared with other City agencies that might need the information to resolve the issue. The City does not sell or market such information in any way, to anyone. The City will disclose such information to third parties only when required to do so by law.

The City does not publicly disclose it's procedures for the security of web assets. The City attempts to maintain industry best practices and monitors network traffic to identify unauthorized attempts access information or to otherwise cause damage to the website. The City will take all appropriate security measures to protect unauthorized access, alteration, or destruction of data. Including prosection to the full extent of the law of persons found breaking the law as it relates to computer security. Use of city online services is voluntary.

The City encourages the public to visit the City's website (http://www.cityofchesapeake.net) as the first place to look for information on City resources and services. The City is dedicated to facilitating easy access to web resources for all citizens. Computers with web access are available for public use in City Hall as well as all Chesapeake Public Libraries.

What is "Accessibility"?
"Accessibility" means that all people, despite physical challenges and disabilities, can access web resources to find the information they need. Meeting this goal is a challenge. Technology to make "accessibility" a reality is constantly changing; both for the provider of the information as well as the person requesting the information.
